Appearance
The industrial calcium carbide (calcium carbide) is gray, brown yellow or black. it may present purple whencalcium carbide content is high. The new wound surface shows a luster. When it is exposed to the air, itmay become gray since it is easy to absorb moisture and thus lose the luster.

Properties
Melting point ('C): the melting point of calcium carbide varies from the calcium carbide content, and themelting point of pure calcium carbide is 2300'℃. The melting point of about 80%-puritycalcium carbide usually is 2000'C more or less.
Inflammability: it is inflammable at the dry status but it may release spontaneous combustible flammablegas when touching water.
Solubility: Soluble in water and ethanol, and slightly soluble in ether.

Applications
Calcium carbide is mainly used for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by a calcium carbide process;also used for the production of acetylene products in the metal cutting; and used for the production ofneoprene rubber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), lime nitrogen and its derivatives.

Product Storage and Transportation Notes
It is stored in a special-purpose cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. The warehouse temperature shall not exceed 32℃ and its relative humidity shall not exceed 75%.Stay away from the fire and heat sources. The packaging must be sealed and shall not be affected with damp. It shall be stored separately from water, acid, alcohol and so on. Do not mix and transport with them. Storage areas shall be equipped with appropriate materials for containment of leaks.
Iron barrels shall not be inverted during transportation. When the barrel is filled with nitrogen, it shall be marked on the package and on the goods waybill. The transport vehicles shall be equipped with the fire-fighting equipment and the leakage emergency equipment in corresponding type and quantity. During the transportation, you shall ensure the container does not leak, tip over, fall, or get damaged. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport with water, acids and alcohols. It shall be prevented from exposure to sunlight, rain and high temperature. The transport vehicles and ships must be dry and be equipped with the satisfactory rain proof facilities.
